Kevin Coyne – Legless In Manila & Knocking On Your Brain
Many musicians have become better known, but few have done more good work or been in the business longer than Kevin Coyne. Before Coyne moved from England to his new home in Nuremberg, Germany, and got a handle on his depression and alcohol problems, “Legless In Manila” with English backing musicians Steve Lamb (b), David Sheen (dr) and Peter Hope-Evans (harm) was the last work made in his old home country. By the ’90s, Coyne had re-established himself as a true underground force, releasing a steady stream of albums of dizzying variety (and availability). On the 1997 album “Knocking On Your Brain,” top German musicians such as Ali Neander (Rodgau Monotones), Tom Liwa (Flowerpornoes), Ralf Gustke (Gianna Nannini) and Willy Wagner (Rio Reiser Band) accompanied him. Special guest on the CD is Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, Lou Reed). Outstanding his slide guitar on the opening track “Wonderland”, great as always Kevin’s vocals and interpretations, his lyrics and his improvisations, over twenty songs were recorded in three days.
